Summary: It doesn't take more than a moment's thought for Abbie to realize that she's going to have to bring Ichabod home. The man can't even figure out how to unlock a car door, a hotel is absolutely out of the question. He'd probably lock himself inside and then starve to death.

Reccer Notes: The way nickelmountain reads Abbie's pov fits really nicely with both the character we've come to know her on the show, and the author's interpretation of her. Nickelmountain's reading manages to be simultaneously full of affection for Ichabod, and also so, so done with the day and so, so tired; I just want to wrap her up and cook for her and make everything not her problem. Happily, Ichabod does one of the three, and the whole thing is just a really sweet slice-of-life that is really true to everyone's voices, both literally and metaphorically :D

Awhile ago I was talking about doing some femslash and female-centric recs for pod-aware. The latter is still in process, I'm sorry to say, and I had wanted to write more recs than this, but I ran out of time :( So have some femslash recs for Teen Wolf, Merlin, and Avengers

the Shoemaker (read by jelazakazone, from a fic written by fleete) (Merlin, Freya/Gwen)
A historical magical AU in which Freya teaches tiny children how to magic and has a massive crush on the shoemaker's apprentice. She's not sure of the apprentice's gender, but that's beside the point.
(full disclosure: I beta'ed this podfic)
Jelazakazone's reading of this story is really clear, distinct, and consistent, and her affection for the story and the characters is evident. She does a really nice job with the different voices

All About Trajectory (read by dapatty, from a fic written by 51stcenturyfox) (Avengers, Darcy/Natasha)
Darcy has a crush on Natasha. But everyone thinks she has a crush on Clint. Damnit.
(full disclosure: this was an ITPE gift for me)
I'll be honest, I just have heart eyes all over this podfic. Dapatty's reading of Darcy's pov is entirely delightful and never fails to make me grin from ear to ear, it's just the right side of over-the-top drama that is so perfectly in character and such a great fit for this story.

Pulling on All Your Threads (read by knight_tracer, from a fic written by clio_jh) (Teen Wolf, Lydia/Erica)
A Project Runway AU in which Lydia is here to win, Erica is very flirty, and they make it work.
Knight_tracer's reading style works really well for this story; she does a great job with all the voices and their many (many many) emotional inflections, which are just as over-the-top and dramatic as one might expect from a Project Runway AU :)

If There Was a Me for You (read by exmanhater, from a fic written by false_alexis) (Avengers, Maria Hill/Natasha)
Soulbond AU. Natasha and Maria are soulmates. Unfortunately, Maria is a rising star at SHIELD and the Black Widow is a rogue assassin who needs to be taken off the playing field.
Exmanhater has a really lovely reading style that's easy and relaxing to listen to, and does a great job of conveying Maria's I-am-excellent-at-my-job-thank-you-very-much-why-no-I-am-not-having-emotions-ness, while, of course, making it clear that she is so torn and Natasha is being so difficult and unreadable and what does she want oh my god!

For Science! (read by sisi_rambles, from a fic written by meinterrupted) (Avengers, Jane/Darcy)
a tiny podficlet in which Darcy learns that Jane has missed an essential part of the college experience.
An adorable little thing that always makes my smile as soon as sisi_rambles reads the title. She distinguishes Jane and Darcy's voices well, and the whole thing is just a tiny package of super-cute and happiness <3

Strangers in a Strange Land (read by regonym, from a fic written by gyzym) (Avengers, Darcy/Sif)
In which Darcy realizes that it's probably less than wise to make fun of a drunk diety of legend
regonym's reading of this story is wonderfully dry and does a great job of conveying just how done Darcy is with Jane and Thor boinking, and then segues well into her having having eyes in her eyes over Sif <3_<3

#girlavengers (read by reena_jenkins and sisi_rambles, from a fic written by burritosong) (Avengers, Maria/Natasha)
Natasha trends on twitter, and accumulates a posse.
I love the way reena_jenkins and sisi_rambles split the voices for this - reena_jenkins reads most of the story, and sisi_rambles does the twitter bits, which makes really great parallels with the themes of cooperation and girlpower of the story, and makes the whole thing really come alive :D

HD 181068 (read by cantarina, from a fic written by saathi1013) (Avengers, Jane/Darcy/Thor)
First it's Jane/Darcy, then it's Jane/Thor and Darcy, and eventually they work around to Jane/Thor/Darcy
Cantarina does a really nice job with Darcy's pov :) she makes Darcy more mature than she's usually portrayed, which was a good choice for this story. One of my favorite parts of her reading, though, is flirty!Jane:when she says "I'll take that offer!" - it makes me grin every time :D

I started writing these before the reveals for the Women and Genderqueers First Podfic Exchange went live, so the many, many beautiful femslash podfics that were created through that sadly don't appear here :(

Reccer Notes:
What do I, a listener, need to know about hockey in order to fully appreciate this podfic?
Alex/Sasha is the trolliest matchmaker the NHL has ever seen. He is Russian.
Geno/Zhenya is also Russian. He and Sid play on the same team, which is not the team that Alex is on.
Sid is amazing at anything hockey-related, and terrible at anything that isn't hockey-related. He's Canadian.
None of them are playing hockey, because of union issues. Alex is bored. This is dangerous.
Hockey terms get thrown around. Alex pretends not to know what they mean, so you don't have to know them either.

Convince me that this podfic is amazing in under 1 second:

How would you, kalakirya, summarize this podfic: 25 minutes of joy and delight. knight_tracer reads the pov character in a gloriously hilarious way that I feel compelled to describe as “rollicking”. It's one of those podfics in which the reader's absolute glee at the story comes through really really well, and it's a lot of fun to listen to even if you have absolutely no idea what's going on. I had a lot of trouble choosing a clip to use, because there are a lot of them; the only reason I went with what I did was that it required no explanation. Other contenders include: “Sergei was so right”, “Do you think I should shave my head again, as warrior for justice?”and “Russian all about feeling”
Okay, after realizing that I was just retyping most of the fic, I'm cutting my Lengthy List of Hilarity down to three quotes and sending you to the streaming page. Go. Now. It's a thing of beauty and joy and you will not regret a moment of it.

Summary: Kali can breathe life back into a corpse, but what exactly is Gabriel now? Gabriel flits around various centuries trying to work that out, Dean has another powered-down angel and a little brother to look out for, Castiel has forgotten how to trust, and someone keeps sending Sam annoying little notes on his laptop. Oh, and Bobby would like to remind you all that there’s an Apocalypse still going on. Covers season 5 from Gabriel’s death to the finale.

Reccer Notes: ok, full disclosure: I was the beta for this, and recorded the footnotes. Also, this hits every single one of my buttons (Gabriel! history! Middle English! hurt/comfort!). But I have no shame, and love this thing to pieces, so.
So the first thing you have to know is that I came thiiiiiiiiiiiis close to putting "listener/history" as a pairing, and I think [personal profile] kdheart would agree that that would have been entirely justified. The amount of historical detail the author packs into the story (without it being an infodump!) is amazing and fascinating and just SO COOL and gives the whole thing this incredible depth that I just want to bask in geeked-out glee over it. But if history isn't your thing, don't let that stop you! There are handy footnotes that explain stuff in a non-intrusive way and they serve a purpose. That might be one of my favorite things, actually: the fact that every single one of the historical side trips has a plot-or-characterization-relevant purpose. Or both. And are often just plain funny. Don't get me wrong, I love characters-X-and-Y-in-historical-period-epsilon to death, but it's really lovely to watch each little side-trip add on to Gabriel journey of self-discovery. And, when he's no bouncing around Medieval Europe an having heart-to-hearts with Casanova, he's texting Sam and making him crazy, which is always fun.
Right, so this story is the bee's knees, you may be thinking, but why should I listen rather than read it? Because the podfic adds an amazing amount of texture and complexity and simplification and feeling and love for these characters and historical periods, that's why. Because kdheart does a really great job of reading the French and Italian and Old English and Middle English and whatnot in such a way that it sounds like dialogue - which, believe you me, is a lot harder than it sounds. The thing about a bunch of those languages is that they either a) aren't pronounced the way you think they should be according to modern pronunciation rules or b) sound not too far off from modern English but the spelling is entirely whack-a-doodle. And kdheart pronounces it right, which makes a lot of the dialogue make more sense if you haven't spent years learning how to read Old English. And if you still don't get it, there are footnotes with translations :D On that note, having the translations and explanatory footnotes near the line they reference and yet separate from it (different reader!) made things SO MUCH MORE COMPREHENSIBLE. The written fic has the footnotes at the end of the page or of the chapter, which was incredibly annoying and disruptive to read (hovertext footnotes ftw!), but the audiofootnotes come in where they're useful, but because it's a different voice it's easier for the brain to not lose track of the story. Cognitive linguistics and parrallel processing ftw <3 That's also where the complexity comes in - there are a number of language jokes that depend on similar pronounciations or sounds, and those are a LOT easier to get when read to you by someone who knows what they're doing, rather than you trying to decipher the spelling :D
But also! There's just so much love in this podfic. Love for the story and for four complete goobers with severe cases of emotional constipation who take for fucking ever to work through their issues but you don't give a damn because the ride is so much FUN! And also heart-wrenching, sometimes. But that's ok, because kdheart just keeps reading, and you get swept along, and the goobers work it out, and then celebrate, and you kinda want to celebrate with them <3

Summary: The delegation returns.

Reccer Notes: though this wasn't, in fact ,the first podfic I ever listened to (that honor goes to lunchee's The Pendragon Guide to How Not to Date, for which a rec is forcoming), this was the first one that brought tears of laughter to my eyes - several times over, even - and the one that made me want to try my hand at it. Because the amazing wonderful glorious reader (it might be helpful at this juncture to explain that I worshiped lunchee from afar for a very long time [the difference now being it's no longer "afar"]) was having SO MUCH FUN. SO. MUCH. FUN.
Because this story is nuts. No, really, it's nuts. It was written when all we had of Merlin was series/season 1 and several hundred years of Arthuriana and no one knew what was happening except it was all lovely and everyone was friends and obviously Merlin and Arthur were an item and we were genre-savvy enough to ship Gwen/Lancelot (unless we shipped Gwen/Morgana) and everything was glee and roses and moaning your liege-lord's name in bed while sweating profusely.
I don't want to explain what's going on with the written story - you should definitely go check it out, but only after listening to the podfic (because they're different works and the podfic and lunchee's work is what's important here - which is why I'm not linking. it's in the podfic links). Because while the author did some stuff, lunchee made it SO MUCH BETTER. It flows better, the sound effects are HILARIOUS, Merlin's dismay at Arthur's beard top lip growth is palpable, and Morgana Seeing The Future will never not make me crack up.

Summary: "Stiles always tries to protect the ones he loves, but sometimes he's the one who needs protection. (Or, in which Stiles is a werewolf and Derek didn't make him that way.)"

Reccer Notes: heardtheowl has a great way of taking really intense (and sometimes frightening) stories and making them not less frightening or intense, but less stressful. I don't mean that her clear and articulate reading diminishes the story in any way, but makes it less isolating - I'm not alone in the experience of the story, the way I am when reading the written version. I can trust that her voice will take me through the angst and hurt and into the (excellent!) comfort. All of which says that you should go listen to other podfic by this reader pronto.
You should listen to this one specifically because, quite frankly, she did a really great job. It's a tricky story - there are a number of flashbacks, some really intense dialogue, a lot of really heavy (and intense!) emotions flying around, and heardtheowl handled it all very deftly. She reads clearly and well, uses affect without overdoing it, and carries the listener through the story very well. Also the sex scene was really hot <3

(reccer's summary: in which objects talk to John - literally - and sometimes John talks back.)

Reccer Notes:
There are a number of ways to record collaborations - in person, over skype, separately and combining mp3s - and they all have advantages and disadvantages, but this podfic captures one of my favorite reasons to record in person, which is that it just sounds like people having fun. My favorite is a scene between 1:15 and 3:20 - it's just a little domestic bit between Sherlock and John, in which the objects in the room kibitz and complain and rejoice: the way the podficcers bat the lines back and forth (lunatique narrates, lunchee is John and yue_ix is Sherlock) and it just all comes together really nicely. Also the rejoicing refrigerator magnet makes me smile every single time :D

There are two versions, with and without echo, and I'd suggest the echo one, because it clarifies a little bit more what's going on (the objects echo, but dialogue and narration doesn't, so it makes it clearer that only John can hear them)

Republic City to Ba Sing Se, with a number of lessons learnt in the process. Korra and Asami take a road trip.

Reccer Notes:

ok, here's the thing: I am a COMPLETE SUCKER for podfics in which the reader's enthusiasm for the story they're telling comes through. There are a lot of reasons to podfic, and a lot of styles of podficcing, and not all of them lend themselves well to that enthusiasm coming through in the reading, and that's ok, but when it's there, it's AWESOME. I was already well pre-disposed to this podfic - exmanhater, Avatar-verse, FEMMESLASH - but there's a moment about 45 minutes in when exmanhater reads Korra asking a group of travellers if they know the "secret tunnel song" and I broke out in grins and pulled up DW to write this insta-rec because YES LOLING FOREVER because Korra's enthusiasm comes through but the reader's enthusiasm and love for both A:tLA and Korra comes through and it's all these layers and love and enthusiasm and in the next line the traveller says "everyone asks that" and it's so fond :). Actually, let's be real, exmanhater is an amazing reader, so there are a lot of little moments in this podfic that give me ALL THE FEELS: there's a moment about 30 minutes in when Asami has just reassured Korra (sort of awkwardly, because they're teenagers, and therefore SO AWKWARD *pets them*) and Korra says "thanks Asami" and it's two little words but you get this whole "I'm awkward and don't know what to do with this moment we're having" and then you remember it's Korra/Asami and then you re-listen and then there's this whole other level of awkwardness there too of this teenage girl (who's not the pov character!) trying to figure out what these tingly feelings are you can tell in her voice that she's trying to figure that out and you can tell that from two words and aoifhaqnfa, mfbkahg *dies of feels*

Just - this whole podfic just feels like a warm hug to a character that got a lot of hate and it's just really, really lovely :DDD

Summary: "All right," Nate says, and smacks his hands together. "Let's go steal a con artist."

Reccer Notes: this is a really fun and happifying crossover of two lovely and under-appreciated fandoms that's been well and satisfyingly voiced. Fishpatrol reads Alec's pov with all the little bits of opinion and pique and affection that bring a character to life, and as soon as each new character came on scene I could not only tell who they were but what they were up to, which is really cool because the Alec as the pov character doesn't know either of those things, and you can tell from his voice that he doesn't. The whole thing is a really different experience than reading the story, where though it's Alec's pov the little bits of him that remind you that it's his pov don't always come through and the whole thing ends up being a bit more omniscient, and that does have it's own place but it's a lot of fun to be guided through the twists and turns of a character's understanding of the situation, while also having outside information to make more sense of it than he can, and fishpatrol is an excellent tourguide :D

Violent Amoral Unicorn of Justice Gets Knocked Up (read by podcath, chemm80, rhea314 and aphelant) (actually three stories - Taken by astolat, the Look you get by lazulisong, and Bun in the Oven by judgebunnie) (mpreg ahoy. also alpha/beta. and crack.)
I love this series of cracklets for a lot of the same reasons that I love repods, and podfic in general: it's really, really fun to hear how someone else interpreted a story. These little things, though, work in sequence rather than in parallel, and it's just really cool because each reader or set of readers is perfectly matched to the story they're doing - podcath is quietly calm with Taken and it's great because all through the sex scene you entirely forget the cracky premise because her reading is really hot and then rhea314 and chemm80 start in on the Look You Get and the two of them read it straight but with these little bits of insight into the sheer crackitude of the premise and you clue in a little more because John cares about sheets and then there's aphelant with Bun in the Oven and I love her reading of the degree to which no one wants to have the conversation with John about him scaling back his "dangerous proclivities" or discuss Finch's sexual prowess and out of context it would be kinda weird but with the buildup it works because the weird has been creeping up on them and they didn't realize it until now and you're in the same boat and I just :DDD

Ring read by lunate8, from a story written by speranza (16min)
This is a very different story than the previous bunch - it's more in keeping with the tone of the show, and lunate8's reading is appropriate to the setting. This sounds odd to say (to write?) but I buy her readings of John and Harold in this story, though they didn't make sense to me when I read the written story. A large part of both the mythos of the show and of this story revolves around John and Harold each not knowing or quite understanding what the other is up to, and there's one part specifically of the story that's told from John's point of view where John knows what's happening and is keeping it from Harold and from the reader, and as written that frustrated me to no end. Lunate8's reading, though, has an immediacy and a sort of urgent-first-person-self-absorption-(despite-being-told-in-the-third-person) such that I understood why it made sense that John was so caught up in the moment that he didn't need to explain to himself (and therefore the reader) what was going on. Her use of sound effects is sparse but very effective, and it feeds right back into that nearly-first-person-pov thing that is just so cool to listen to :D

Self-Defense (and Detritus and the Silenus Club) read by podcath (35min)
This podfic I can see being an episode of the show, and while part of that is podcath's brilliant choice of story, I think most of it is her reading. Something about her pacing is very visual, if that makes sense; she takes her time with each word and phrase, and sometimes lingers a bit on descriptors when it makes sense to in the story, and I'm not explaining this well so we'll go with the example of a such that a sex scene that I read as happening fairly quickly in her reading is spun out so that both the pov character and I were focusing on tiny little details of skin and sound and suction and sibilance and there's another bit farther on when Harold is discovering details and putting together a picture of what John's doing and the way podcath takes you through it you're with him every step of the way because he's taking in every detail and the reading is so rich that you almost don't want the story to keep moving because you're sure there are all these bits that you're not getting because there's just so much there and it's just all really, really lovely and really, really well done and I love every bit of everything in it (I also rec the other two podfics she's done in this fandom, Detritus and the Silenus Club)

Flock Together (read by greeniron) (from a story written by galaxysoup) (9:30min)
We've come nearly full circle, from crack to not-too-serious-an-episode-like to serious-episode to not-quite-crack, because Bear has found a cat version of Harold and has brought it home and it is the cutest thing and yet quite believable because, after all, Harold canonically once panicked and stole a baby. This is a cute little bit of fluff that doesn't seem like it should make sense, but actually it kinda really does, and greeniron's reading brings out all the little bits of Finch's horror that Bear found him a kitten and John's dismay at being left with a class of preschoolers and Carter's disbelief that this is her life and then she reads a line about how John's efforts at aiding the preschoolers with their fingerpainting had gone terribly awry and it's just adorable :D

The Alexandrian Solution (Teen Wolf, Derek/Stiles, explicit/NC17) (read by hananobira, from a fic written by bexless) (knotting jokes ahoy) (43min)
If you already have this podfic in your live, you know that hananobira's reading is pitch-perfect and hilarious and sexy and I need say no more. If you do not have this podfic in your life then you should get on that, partly because the story is hot and hilarious, but mostly because hananobira is so clearly having a ball reading it and her amusement is infectious and it's hot and her voice and the story go together really well and just go listen you can thank me later :D

A Perception of Sweethearts Passing Through (Avengers, Natasha/Maria Hill, explicit/NC17) (read by exmanhater and analise010, from a fic written by thingswithwings) (caning and painplay) (20min)
kink! Femslash! COLLAB! :DDDDD
Yes, the story is hot and well-written and all those lovely things and that is awesome, don't get me wrong! But somehow having two readers on a podfic that involves kink and negotiation is even better, and two such wonderful readers takes it into this whole other even awesomer thing because then my brain goes meta about negotiating how to read a scene about sex and negotiation and the whole thing could end up being just unbearably sexy (not that there's anything "just" about unbearably sexy), but having two readers working off each other's readings makes it less about the product than about the interaction and I'm not expressing this well but that's REALLY REALLY COOL <3___<3

might as well kiss the monster, laugh and fuck until you're dead (Teen Wolf, Derek/Stiles, Allison/Scott, Lydia/Peter, Lydia/Scott, Lydia/Jackson, Boyd/Erica, explicit/NC17) (organized by lunchee, with voices by dapatty, fleet, fleurrochard, hello_deer, jelazakazone, mistressjinx, kalakirya, kdheart, krw, lunchee, miss_marina95, podcath, reena_jenkins, sophinisba and teprometo from a story written by hoars) (violence, drugs, infidelity THIS IS DARK AS FUCK OK) (1hour 5min)
ok, so full disclosure, I was a voice in this, and got an advanced beta-listen BUT THIS THING IS SO AWESOME I COULDN'T CARE LESS. It's one of those podfics that feels very different from the written story - not better or worse, just different. The written story is all in pieces, and when I was reading it it took me awhile to pull all the pieces together and figure out what was going on, but the podfic, with all the different voices, doesn't work like that. With some many voices, the text pulls apart a tiny bit - the pieces are read by different people, so they don't fit together as closely - and at least for me, that was a good thing, because it made it easier to see how everything fit together and track what's going on, and remember that all the bits are from different points of view and that's just really cool and I love it :D

Post-Its of a Life Well-Loved (Warehouse 13, HG/Myka, adult/R) (read by jelazakazone, from a fic written by mjduncan) (13min)
This is another one of those podfics that I like listening to just because the reader sounds like they're having so much fun reading the story and has so much affection for the story that, much as I love the story (and I do! Myka and HG! Claudia pov!! EPISTOLARY!!!), my love of it comes secondary to just listening to the podficcer having fun. My favorite bit is her reading of "FORGET THE PICKLES I JUST WANT YOU" and it makes me crack up every time because it's exasperated and horny and in love and it all comes through and I love everything :D

Man Friday (The Eagle, Esca/Marcus, Esca/everyone, adult-ish) (read by greedy_dancer, from a fic written by pouxin) (23min) (college AU, slight slut-shaming language)
The way greedy_dancer reads this is hilarious. There's a lot more I could say, but that's the important bit. HI-LAR-I-OUS. There're a lot of boys being stoopid and emotions flying around and greedy_dancer puts a lot of emphasis into her reading and it's just so much fun to listen to and Marcus' Utter Lack of Understanding of What the Hell Is Going On is great and Esca's I Know What I Life and there's this bit where they transition seamlessly from bickering about Esca's latest one-night-stand to bickering about peanut butter and when I read it the transition didn't make a lot of sense to me but when greedy_dancer read it it all made sense and UGH booooyyyyyys :D

Lights go Out Here I Go Again (Merlin, Merlin/Arthur, explicit/NC17) (read by jelazakazone, from a fic written byhalffizzbin) (vibrators)
awww poor Arthur is new to the modern age and there's nothing for him to do and has no clue what this odd object is and GO GOD IT MOVES and jelazakazone's reading of Arthur's confusion and surprise is lovely because the story could have been bittersweet and confused and lost but instead it's Arthur exploring this strange new world and he's excited and intrigued and willing to ~experiment and it's just lovely and that's all in the reading and :D

The Morning After (Anthropomorphic, Fandom/Pinboard, Fandom/Delicious, Teen/PG13) (read by greedy_dancer, from a fic written by ambyr) (THE BEST KIND OF CRACK) (5min)
dude. It's anthropomorphic crack about Fandom and Pinboard and Delicious. Read by greedy_dancer. It is Awesome In All Ways. Go. Now. Though I think Delicious moaning "But I gave her back her slash symbol D:" is my favorite :D

Not Fooling Anybody (Jeeves and Wooster, Bertie/Jeeves, Teen/PG13) (read by majoline, from a fic written by random_nexus) (7min)
What can I say, it's another podfic where the podficcer is clearly having fun reading this adorable story, and it's just a lot of fun to be carried along by that. The story is good too, and it's cute as written, but Bertie and Jeeves' affection for each other comes through all the better for the reader's affection for the two of them and I just love it so :D

Star Spangled
(Captain America, gen) (read by luzula, from a fic written by boombangbing) (44min) This is one of those stories that fills in some of the gaps that tends to niggle - what was Steve doing in his spare time on those USO tours? This story suggests that he spent time with the USO girls, and no, not like that; just being friends, and Steve learning how to braid hair and everyone figuring out how in the world they're going to balance on that motorcycle and ragging on each other about dating in war time, but it's more than that, too. There's this bit about 6 minutes in when one of the girls is talking about her younger brother, who wants to do his part in the war effort by joining up but is too young, and when I read the text I only registered one reason for Steve to feel uncomfortable - the text talks about how Steve doesn't feel he's doing anything for the war effort, and one of the girls corrects him by pointing out that selling war bonds is actually really useful - but the way luzula read it I finally got the other sets of uncomfortable parallels between Steve and the girl's kid brother, and it just all clicked, and that was lovely :D

Practical Mathematics
(Captain America, Avengers, gen, though with references to a bunch of pairings including Steve/USO girls, Steve/Peggy, Steve/Bucky, and Bucky/Steve/Peggy) (read by sisi_rambles, from a fic written by grey_bard) (12min) This podfic is adorable for many reasons, but I think my favorite is the way sisi_rambles reads the back-and-forth between it's-not-a-big-deal Steve and IT-MOST-CERTAINLY-IS Tony. They're both so clearly talking at cross-purposes and approaching the question at hand with entirely different definitions and cultural contexts, and sisi_rambles' Steve is so blazé about it all and her Tony is so surprised to have his mental image of Captain America The Virginal proven nearly entirely wrong and it's just a lot of fun to listen to :D

5 Times Cint made Coulson Flour-based Foods
(Avengers, Clint/Coulson) (read by sly_hostetter , from a fic written by perpetual_motion) (18:30min) I'm not entirely sure if I can explain why I love this podfic, but I'll do my best. I think it has something to do with the fact that sly_hostetter 's Clint and Coulson ring true - they're smart and snarky but also professional and get the job done but also affectionate when there's space for that and you can hear their affection for each (and the reader's affection for both of them) in sly_hostetter's reading and that's just so... happifying, to listen to. A lot of really wonderful podfics are a podficcer reading you a story and doing so really really well, sometimes to the extent that both the podficcer and the writer disappear and it's just you and the characters - and that can be great, don't get me wrong! but sometimes you want company, too, and this podfic feels like you're sitting next to a friend watching two idiots in love be competent at each other, and that's really, really lovely :D

(Avengers, Tony/Steve) (read by exmanhater / intransitive from a fic written by whizzy) (5:44:46min) I have spent many many many happy hours whiling away the time listening to this podfic, and each and every time I notice something new about exmanhater's reading. I don't mean that her reading is difficult to understand or opaque, only that it's incredibly nuanced. I especially love her rendition of Peggy, both the way she reads her, and the editing choices that were made. This character is described at one point as fiercely protective and sometimes violent in her fury (I'm paraphrasing), and the way exmanhater reads her, I can believe it. Also, I really, really love the fact that she doesn't use an effect for Peggy's voice - I know I sometimes get carried away with the possibilities of filters and echoes and all sorts of bells and whistles; and the way the text of this story the choice to use effects would certainly have been justified, and had Peggy's voice had an effect I certainly wouldn't have questioned it. But the choice not to go the bells-and-whistles route is also a good choice, and this podfic is a really good example of that - the story is told from Steve's pov, and to me the lack of effects for Peggy means that he hasn't put her on some high pedestal from which She Speaks As A Goddess; he respects her and values her advice, but it's much more of an equal relationship that gives both of them space to be themselves, and that fits so well with their interactions in this story, and it's not something I got from reading the story (somewhat the opposite, in fact - in the written text Peggy's lines are set off) and it's just a great example of a podfic that takes a written story and puts a twist on it that brings out all these little bits of the story that make it that much better :D (also, and I can't rec this podfic without saying this - the way exmanhater reads the narrative, it makes perfect sense and sounds perfectly natural, and then you have to turn it off for some reason and RL comes back into focus and you remember that the story is narrated in very archaic-sounding prose that makes perfect sense in-universe but could be really jarring read aloud, but exmanhater handles it in such a way that it all sounds perfectly natural at the time and <3 <3 <3)

okay so during amplirecathon 2012 [personal profile] podcath  made this great reclist titled "reading +" and I thought it was the best thing ever because it highlighted some of the things that I lovelovelove about certain podfics that bring out or create elements that were less apparent in the written version and the story becomes that much more powerful in new and fascinating ways.

There's a Wolf-Shaped Float in this Parade  (read by [personal profile] podcath, [personal profile] knight_tracer and [personal profile] rhea314, written by [personal profile] concernedlily) (Teen Wolf, Derek/Stiles)
This is a two-ways-and-one fic, and each reader voices one of the ways "it" could have gone, and the separate voices are a great reminder that these are alternate possibilities rather than concurrent/sequential ones (ie they can't all be true - I'm not explaining things well today :P) and each reader brings a slightly different version of Stiles and Derek and Sheriff Stilinksi and one of the things I love about repods is the different versions but this podfic kind of rolls them all together and the whole thing is just really, really well done :D

From the Voicemail of the British Government (read by [personal profile] podlizzie and [personal profile] in_the_bottle, written by [personal profile] lavvyan) (Sherlock BBC, implied Sherlock/John)
This is an amazing model of what pod_together collaboration can look like - it's a fic that, while it's perfectly readable, I think works even better as a podfic, and even better than that as a two-voiced podfic. [personal profile] podlizzie and [personal profile] in_the_bottle switch off narration, which makes it much easier to keep the two threads seperate, but having only two voices (and having the alternate guest in the one they're not primary in - I'm explaining this badly, but it makes sense when you listen to it) reminds you that the threads are linked and events in the one affect the other and it's just adorable and hilarious and everyone did an amazing job :D

Good Help is Hard to Find (read by [personal profile] fleurrochard, written by [personal profile] somnolentblue) (part of pod_together 2012) (Good Omens, gen)
I love Crowley's sibilance and the idea of Pepper working in the shop and the sound effect for footnotes and the writing but most of all OMFG the sound files in the written story are BRILLIANT and a really cool blurring of the lines between podfic and written fic and I will never listen to "The Hills are Alive" the same way again and ALL THE LOVE FOR THE BALLAD OMFG

Cursed (read by [personal profile] dr_fumbles_mcstupid , written by [archiveofourown.org profile] somanytabs ) (Avengers, gen)
(In which Loki is a Disney Princess) If you're not curious about this fic from the description, you should be for the reader. [personal profile] dr_fumbles_mcstupid's done some really lovely podfics, but I wanted to single this one out for the hilarious incorporation of Disney songs. I really, really love that she (and a male voice, who I believe she said was her brother) sang the songs themselves - it incorporates the songs into the story, rather than having them be musical interludes. Also Tony's leer on "so, want some help with your unicorn problem?" has an audible eyebrow waggle, which is impressive.

Be No Stranger (All Your Saints and Soldiers Remix) (read by [personal profile] fire_juggler and [personal profile] paraka, written by [personal profile] jibrailis) (Avengers, Steve/Tony)
This interesting thing about this one is that [personal profile] fire_juggler and [personal profile] paraka aren't switching off points of view so much as they're switching off points in Tony's timeline. But one of the important points of the story is the ways in which time and experiences change a person, and what's really awesome about having two such wonderful readers collaborate is that not only that they bring different things to the different eras, but both let their characters evolve during the podfic, so there's this tension not only between them and the different eras they voice but in the character, so it goes from one character (Tony) to two (Tony era A and Tony era B) to lots and lots and lots (TonyA and TonyB and TonyB(affected by Steve1) and TonyB(affected by TonyB (affected by Steve1)) and TonyC(affected by TonyB (affected by Steve1 (affected by SteveB))) and you get the idea <333

No. (read by [personal profile] jenepod, [personal profile] paraka, [personal profile] reena_jenkins, and [personal profile] bessyboo, written by [personal profile] gyzym) (meta)
Okay this is an amazing piece of meta on sexism is media and it is amazingly written and amazingly recorded and it is powerful and wonderful and... I can't really explain it, except to say - you know that feeling when you look into space, or  with a particularly epic book or movie or intense poem or standing on a pier in a heavy rainstorm or at the top of a really high mountain and get this fierce anger/joy/fury/pride that makes you want to laugh and cry and dance and scream all at once? Yeah. That's how I feel about this little piece of meta.

other podfic recs lists I made for pod_aware - character-centric recs and Pornily Wonderful Podfics
kalakirya: (Default)
it's one of the interesting facets of podfic-fandom that people are kinda leery of porn in podfic, despite the fact that there are some really great examples of the genre ;)
I've found that I'm not entirely immune, so I'm not giving the effusive recs I prefer, so I'll say this instead:

These are well-narrated, clearly narrated, lovingly read, lovely examples of the porny perfection of podfic. There are also many longer podfics with truly lovely/dirty/explicit scenes, but I wanted to rec some podfics that are just Podfics With Porn, because sometimes, you just want someone to read you porn.

Heated from the Inside (read by reena_jenkins, written by helens78) (Charles/Erik) (temperature play, anal beads)

The Mating Misadventures of Alpha Wolf and Hyper-Active Boy (read by dodificus, written by onelittlesleep) (dub-con kinda, mild assault, blood play, age discrepancy, unsafe sex, waterports) (yes, I know that's a lot of warnings. It's also over an hour  long. And awesome. Just listen okay?)

other podfic recs posts I'm doing for pod_aware - character-centric and collabs and other shiny things
kalakirya: (Default)
I wanted to do something smart and original for the rec day at pod_aware, but then I realized that actually, all I *really* wanted to do was wax effusive over podfics. So I did XD

This is part one of three podfic rec posts - this one is organized by character. Two is Podfics With (just) Porn, and three is Collabs (and other shiny shiny things)

note - the summaries are mine, rather than the podficcer- or author-given ones! I'm the only one to blame for them!

Steve Rogers
Imprint (read by [personal profile] sundancekid, written by [livejournal.com profile] hetrez ) (gen)
(Steve is bored but isn't allowed to rescue kittens. So he gets some (human) ducklings instead.)
I have a thing for confident!Steve, and [personal profile] sundancekid brings that out in this Steve, but without overdoing it. It's not that he's not having trouble dealing with things, and at times you can hear how tired he is, but he just keeps going, and that helps everyone else keep going, and you can hear it as they get closer and yes this podfic gives me many many feels :D

Captain America is Not a Republican (read by [archiveofourown.org profile] darlingsweet, written by [personal profile] shadowen) (gen)
(Does What It Says On The Tin. Also, there's a press conference.)
This one is also confident!Steve, but more of a Rock-in-a-Raging-River Steve: he knows what the Right Thing is, so that's what he's going to do. I lovelovelove that [archiveofourown.org profile] darlingsweet  reads him as a confident speaker, rather than a shy one, and then when the other Avengers are excited (and sundancekid's excited!Tony is adorable!) he's still confident, not aw-shucks-y, or surprised, just... himself <333

Come at Me (read by [personal profile] susan_voight, written by [personal profile] closer) (Tony/Pepper, Steve/Tony/Pepper)
(In which Steve deals with the 21st century. Also zombies. He doesn't like zombies. And Pepper and Tony are really cute together, aren't they?)
Listening to Steve become more sure of himself, of his place in the Avengers and with Pepper and Tony, is simply lovely. [personal profile] susan_voight does great job both with his insecurities and with his growing confidence, and both are in contrast to how he is as Captain America, and you can *hear* when he switches over, and it's not something I got from the written story and it's *awesome*

Fragments (read by [personal profile] niko, written by anon) (warnings for depression)
There are moments when I'm listening to this when I'm not sure if I want to hug Steve or [personal profile] niko  or myself. This is one of those fics that I couldn't read, but listening to it was really cathartic because when [personal profile] niko 's reading it it's not just you and Steve, it's you and Steve and [personal profile] niko , and I don't mean that the reading is distracting in any way, but that it... makes it ok, somehow, because it means that you're not not alone in the experience of it.

Natasha Romanov
The Shoes Make the Woman (read by [personal profile] reena_jenkins, written by [archiveofourown.org profile] clio_jlh ) (Pepper/Natasha)
(Natasha/Pepper/Shoes = OT3)
You can hear it when [personal profile] reena_jenkins takes Natasha from fake-enthusiasm to real-enthusiasm to oops-what-are-these-fuzzy-feelings-I-feel and then they seduce each other and it's intimate and sexy and nothing *happens* and the narration isn't overdone but you're left in no doubt that when they do fall into bed together it will be *amazing*

Another Country (read by [personal profile] greedy_dancer, written by victoria_p/musefool) (Natasha/Bucky)
This is an interesting one, because while in some ways it's got some of the same I-Am-What-I-Am as Captain America is Not a Republican, while that one makes me want to glomp Steve, this makes me want to just sit back and watch Natasha be Natasha. I'm not sure what it is, though I do think a large part of it is [personal profile] greedy_dancer's matter-of-fact reading - I don't mean that it's affect-less or monotone, but the reading has the same kind of restrained feel Natasha has, where each word individually doesn't seem vital, but taken together and in context the whole thing becomes the kind of fierce and strong and self-defining that makes you want to step back and just listen, because it exists perfectly well without your involvement and that's beautiful to hear. That sounds weird. It's hard to describe and I've been writing and re-writing this rec for two weeks and it never is quite right, but this was as close as I could get.

RED (read by [personal profile] lattice_frames , written by [personal profile] waldorph) (Natasha/Maria Hill, Clint/Coulson)
It's tempting to compare RED to Another Country, because both stories focus on Natasha-now vs Natasha-then ("then" being her childhood training in the USSR, where "childhood" is a severe misnomer), but they're two fairly different podfics, and part of my reason for using this format was so I could put them side-by-side. Though both [personal profile] lattice_frames  and [personal profile] greedy_dancers' Natashas have this wonderful I-Am-What-I-Am thing happening, where [personal profile] greedy_dancer's made me want to stand back and see what she could do, [personal profile] lattice_frames ' makes me want to hug her close, because she sounds so alone and at the same time so prickly that it was a relief when SHIELD arrived. But lattice_frames didn't let Natasha get over-emotional, which (though at the time I just really wanted someone to hug Natasha D:) was a really good decision because it made Natasha's evolution into that I-Am-What-I-Am state so much more powerful, because she did it and she made those decisions and it's not a "happy" ending (though it's not a sad one!) but it you know it's an ending she made and that's so much more powerful jdfklljsadlsadhf this podfic just gives me all these feels okay?

Clint Barton
Mindset Series (read by [personal profile] regonym, written by [archiveofourown.org profile] sidney_sussex ) (Clint/Coulson)
(a series of five stories in which Clint deals with having OCD)
Okay, so I was torn between reccing this series and reccing The Only John Wayne Left in This Town but decided on this one (though you should definitely check out the other - *sneaky kalakirya is sneaky*) because [personal profile] regonym's reading style fits so very well with the writing. Technically this is Coulson's pov, but Clint is definitely the focus, and [personal profile] regonym 's easy, step-by-step reading lays out the story without giving too much power to the issues Clint's dealing with and I'm not explaining it very well but it's really, really lovely <3

You Know These Words (Like an Old Country Song) (read by [personal profile] reena_jenkins, written by [personal profile] caitri) (Clint/Natasha) (DL from the post rather than the archive!)
(A Supernatural fusion in which Clint used to be a Hunter. And Bruce watches the Ghostfacers)
[personal profile] reena_jenkins' Clint!snark is my favorite Clint!snark and it is lovely and then when Clint has to forcibly drag himself away from a train of thought it sounds *painful* and then he's tired and then he's dubious and then he's snarky again and just go listen, ok :D

Darcy Lewis
Baby You're a Firework (read by [personal profile] greedy_dancer, written by musesfool/victoria_p) (Darcy/Steve)
(Darcy was born on the Fourth of July. So was Steve. Cue Katy Perry and the Happy Birthday Song)
It's possible I haven't been at all subtle about my deep and abiding love for Darcy Lewis, and I lovelovelove [personal profile] greedy_dancer's rendition. Her Darcy is snarky and a little defensive at the beginning and when she opens up it's soooo cuuuuuuute *___* and I just want to wrap her up and take her home and have her make all my coffee <3

This is Not My Ninja Shirt and Cut to Fit (both read by [personal profile] lattice_frames  and written by [personal profile] kellifer) (both Darcy/Clint)
(two separate podfics highlighting the ways in which Darcy is awesome)
okay, so technically these are two separate podfics but they highlight the same character and are from the same reader (and writer), but I love [personal profile] lattice_frames ' Darcy dearly, so I'm cheating and combining them. This is Darcy being awesome and the snarkiest of snarks and it's glorious, but there's a little edge of shit-I'm-a-Normal-amongst-Superheroes that is very relatable and makes it just-that-little-bit-more-awesome :D

Jasper Sitwell
Jasper Sitwell, BNF (read by [personal profile] fleurrochard, written by [archiveofourown.org profile] nekarose ) (gen, background Clint/Coulson)
(in which Sitwell is one of us)
I love meta-in-fanfic, and not only is this fic a good example of it, but [personal profile] fleurrochard 's reading is pitch-perfect: Sitwell's excited about reviews and shocked when fandom infiltrates his RL and then Natasha is talking matter-of-factly about superhusbands and purrs on "legends" and both my and Sitwell's minds are blown :DDD

Loki's Tale (read by [personal profile] cantarina  and guests, written by [archiveofourown.org profile] lcl2  as part of pod_together)
Okay, so, to be honest, this hits all my buttons: epic poetry, collaboration, sound effects, Loki, non-major-character-pov, epic poetry - BUT IT'S SO MUCH MORE THAN THAT, it's a really cool idea brought to life, where it's even better. [personal profile] cantarina's Loki is snarky and prickly and silver-tongued and creepy and calculating and by turns whispers and declaims and denounces and denies and- the story he's telling gets inside your head and pokes at the corners that don't quite meet and the edges that don't quite fit until you find yourself nodding along because ~yeah, he's right~ and then you have to pause the podfic for some reason and you shake it off, because no, he was twisted and twisty and slippery, but... it's like the narrative's been forced wider and now it's quite a bit more complicated and you almost (but not quite) wish you could go back to the easy, uncomplicated story, but now Loki's in your head and he niggles at you because don't you see...

Entropy (read by crinklysolution, written by earthmylikeness) (Derek/Stiles) (warnings for depression)
This probably says more about me and my preferences than it does anything else, but I love this podfic for some of the same reasons that I love Fragments - it's so personal that it hurts, but at the same time its cathartic because it's not just you/Derek, it's you/Derek and crinklysolution, and it's not that the reading is distracting, but that it's so well-done that you know you're not the only one with all these feels, and that makes all the difference :)

To Have Outlived the Night (read by [personal profile] knight_tracer, written by [personal profile] stillane) (Derek/Stiles)
(full disclosure part 1: I did the cover art on this and got a sneak preview and I LOVE IT LIKE BURNING) (full disclosure part 2: I love every knight_tracer's Teen Wolf's podfics and listen to at least one a day and the only reason they're not all here is because this is the one that fit the theme the best but I might well have populated an entire rec list with knight_tracer's podfics)
There's a moment right at the beginning when Derek stutters and every time I'm awed by [personal profile] knight_tracer's narration because I can hear how surprised and excited and dismayed he is and I get all these ~*FEELS*~ and then it just keeps going and Stiles is confused and then horrified and then resigned and then he Has An Idea and Derek Knows He Will Regret This and you can hear it all and I love every moment of this podfic <3

DILF (read by [personal profile] rhea314/pi, written by [personal profile] twentysomething) (Derek/Stiles)
(the one where Derek is a single father and Stiles is Scott's kindergarten teacher and there are dinosaur cupcakes)
Okay, so to be honest, [personal profile] rhea314 has recorded a lot of Teen Wolf podfic and I love every single one. But there always have to be favorites, and this is mine. Jackson is obnoxious and bratty and Scott is adorable (the first time his voice came on I looked around for cheeks to pinch because omgtoocuteforwords) and though it's Derek's pov you can hear the lust/love in Stiles' voice too and when they keep talking past each other but you can hear how much they're interested in each other and it almost hurts except then Scott squeals over cupcakes or Papa Stilinski thinks this is all hilarious and you can hear it all in [personal profile] rhea314's narration and just go listen already :D

Advanced Vocabulary (read by [personal profile] dodificus, written by [personal profile] lolafeist) (Derek/Stiles)
(Derek helps Stiles with his SAT vocabulary. Much learning is had, though not all of the academic variety)
I love this podfic. I love it I love it I love it. There are many reasons I love it, and I'm not sure I can put all of them into words, but I think a large part of it is similar to why I love a lot of the Natasha podfics I've recced earlier - it's lovely to hear Derek get more sure of himself, not just in the writing but in the reading. [personal profile] dodificus is an amazing and amazingly talented podficcer, and it's not so much that I want to hug her Derek to pieces (though I do) as I want to hug him then step back and watch him grow into himself, because if only given the chance he'd be so good for himself and sdflhajdhf it just gives me all these feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeels
kalakirya: (Default)

So I love many, many things and ultimately I decided that this was the best way to organize my thoughts and explain why I was reccing was I was reccing, but there will be another post (posts?) during the free-for-all :D

Aaaaanyway, I tend to focus on a single character in a given fandom (though i'm not exclusive by any mean :D), and one of my favorite things about podfic is that each reader brings something different to the same character.

Phil Coulson (Avengers)
I am Ready, I am Fine (written by [livejournal.com profile] sirona) (read by [livejournal.com profile] sly_hostetter) (Phil/Natasha/Clint)
full disclosure - I was one of the betas for this, but have no shame and love it dearly, and so will rec it anyway :D One of my favorite things about movie!Phil is his combination of unflappability and emotion, and [livejournal.com profile] sly_hostetter *nails* it, with bonus perfect-Natasha-and-Clint. Her wonderfully precise enunciation accentuates Phil's control, but little threads of wistfulness and surprise and love come through at just the right times and are all the more evident for their scarcity earlier in the podfic and it all fits with the theme of oh-they-love-me and is just lovely lovely lovely.

Still Officially Lost (written by [livejournal.com profile] pollyrepeat) (read by [livejournal.com profile] raiining) (Gen)
This is a tricky one because it features not the SHIELD agent we know and love, but a younger, less-experienced Phil dealing with a teenaged Clint who is, unsurprisingly, a little pain in the ass[livejournal.com profile] raiining's reading, though, lets Phil get more confident and assured as the podfic progresses while Clint is by turns obnoxious and vulnerable (the bit when they're talking about Clint joining SHIELD is almost hard to listen to because it's so pitch-perfect teenager-trying-not-to-show-he's-hurt-but-really-quite-upset).

By The Book (written by [livejournal.com profile] perpetualmotion) and Pigeonville, USA (written by [livejournal.com profile] sheafrotherdon) (both read by [livejournal.com profile] regonym) (both Clint/Coulson)
I love these both and it's quite the disservice to combine their recs, because both are lovely podfics, but I love them for the same reason, so I'll be lazy and only write it out once. These are both slice-of-life-ish fics (-ish because they are too well-written to be categorized quite that simply), and [livejournal.com profile] regonym's Phil is delightfully deadpan, with a hint of a laugh that was elusive in movie!Phil but gets teased out in these two, without losing his essential Phil-ness.

Ray Kowalski (Due South)
Saturday Clothes (written by [livejournal.com profile] spuffyduds) (read by [livejournal.com profile] aphelant) (RayK/Fraser)
There's a moment when [livejournal.com profile] aphelant reads the line "Ray hits the bathroom again" and it's ever-so-slightly desperate and so very Ray that I giggle and then have to stop and rewind (three times so far) and then I get farther in and "Fraser can never leave Ray's apartment" and Ray is so *proud* of himself and it's something I didn't get from reading the fic but I love it and it's so Ray and *explodes with feels*

Stiles Stilinski (aka the icecream scoop of our hearts) (Teen Wolf)
His Words were Pearls (written by [livejournal.com profile] saucery) (read by [livejournal.com profile] heard_the_owl) (Derek/Stiles)
Now, don't get me wrong, because I love (lovelovelove) this fic as written, but somehow [livejournal.com profile] heard_the_owl's reading packs an emotional punch that gets me every time. I've lost track of the number of times I've listened to it, but every single time Stiles gets freaked out I'm right there with him.  I'm not sure I could tell you exactly why, but it's probably somewhere in Stiles' amazingly-executed incredulity/horror at the situation and curiosity about same.

Window Sneak (written by [livejournal.com profile] starbeast) (read by [livejournal.com profile] fire_juggler) (Derek/Stiles)
It's hard to pin down just why I love [livejournal.com profile] fire_juggler's Stiles, but I think a large part of it is the pacing. So much of Stiles' character is comic timing and emphases and pratfalls (verbal as well as physical) and [livejournal.com profile] fire_juggler has him down *pat* and it's simply *so much fun* to listen to :D
