okay so during amplirecathon 2012
podcath made this great reclist titled "reading +" and I thought it was the best thing ever because it highlighted some of the things that I lovelovelove about certain podfics that bring out or create elements that were less apparent in the written version and the story becomes that much more powerful in new and fascinating ways.
There's a Wolf-Shaped Float in this Parade (read by
podcath,
knight_tracer and
rhea314, written by
concernedlily) (Teen Wolf, Derek/Stiles)
This is a two-ways-and-one fic, and each reader voices one of the ways "it" could have gone, and the separate voices are a great reminder that these are alternate possibilities rather than concurrent/sequential ones (ie they can't all be true - I'm not explaining things well today :P) and each reader brings a slightly different version of Stiles and Derek and Sheriff Stilinksi and one of the things I love about repods is the different versions but this podfic kind of rolls them all together and the whole thing is just really, really well done :D
From the Voicemail of the British Government (read by
podlizzie and
in_the_bottle, written by
lavvyan) (Sherlock BBC, implied Sherlock/John)
This is an amazing model of what pod_together collaboration can look like - it's a fic that, while it's perfectly readable, I think works even better as a podfic, and even better than that as a two-voiced podfic.
podlizzie and
in_the_bottle switch off narration, which makes it much easier to keep the two threads seperate, but having only two voices (and having the alternate guest in the one they're not primary in - I'm explaining this badly, but it makes sense when you listen to it) reminds you that the threads are linked and events in the one affect the other and it's just adorable and hilarious and everyone did an amazing job :D
Good Help is Hard to Find (read by
fleurrochard, written by
somnolentblue) (part of pod_together 2012) (Good Omens, gen)
I love Crowley's sibilance and the idea of Pepper working in the shop and the sound effect for footnotes and the writing but most of all OMFG the sound files in the written story are BRILLIANT and a really cool blurring of the lines between podfic and written fic and I will never listen to "The Hills are Alive" the same way again and ALL THE LOVE FOR THE BALLAD OMFG
Cursed (read by
dr_fumbles_mcstupid , written by
somanytabs ) (Avengers, gen)
(In which Loki is a Disney Princess) If you're not curious about this fic from the description, you should be for the reader.
dr_fumbles_mcstupid's done some really lovely podfics, but I wanted to single this one out for the hilarious incorporation of Disney songs. I really, really love that she (and a male voice, who I believe she said was her brother) sang the songs themselves - it incorporates the songs into the story, rather than having them be musical interludes. Also Tony's leer on "so, want some help with your unicorn problem?" has an audible eyebrow waggle, which is impressive.
Be No Stranger (All Your Saints and Soldiers Remix) (read by
fire_juggler and
paraka, written by
jibrailis) (Avengers, Steve/Tony)
This interesting thing about this one is that
fire_juggler and
paraka aren't switching off points of view so much as they're switching off points in Tony's timeline. But one of the important points of the story is the ways in which time and experiences change a person, and what's really awesome about having two such wonderful readers collaborate is that not only that they bring different things to the different eras, but both let their characters evolve during the podfic, so there's this tension not only between them and the different eras they voice but in the character, so it goes from one character (Tony) to two (Tony era A and Tony era B) to lots and lots and lots (TonyA and TonyB and TonyB(affected by Steve1) and TonyB(affected by TonyB (affected by Steve1)) and TonyC(affected by TonyB (affected by Steve1 (affected by SteveB))) and you get the idea <333
No. (read by
jenepod,
paraka,
reena_jenkins, and
bessyboo, written by
gyzym) (meta)
Okay this is an amazing piece of meta on sexism is media and it is amazingly written and amazingly recorded and it is powerful and wonderful and... I can't really explain it, except to say - you know that feeling when you look into space, or with a particularly epic book or movie or intense poem or standing on a pier in a heavy rainstorm or at the top of a really high mountain and get this fierce anger/joy/fury/pride that makes you want to laugh and cry and dance and scream all at once? Yeah. That's how I feel about this little piece of meta.
