Day 1

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Rec 1: And Never Been Kissed

The podfic that ate my life for many months (over a year! Spring 2015 to Summer 2016!), kept me going through a period of very dramatic change, including graduation, the break-up of a nearly-three-year relationship, a cross-country move, family drama, several jobs, and a new relationship. I still adore the story with every fiber of my being. I’m very happy with how it came out, I’m very happy with my stick-with-it-ness, I’m very happy that I decided right at the end that it needed to have music, I’m happy that I was working on it as they won the Stanley Cup. It means a lot to me as a story, it means a lot to me as a podfic, and I think that both those come through really well :D

Rec 2: Come Away to the Water

Oh man. I fell super hard for this story several years ago, and always had in the back of my head that it would be an amazing podfic. But I wanted to do justice to it, and asking for permission is hard, and I kept getting distracted by shinies. But one of my resolutions for 2016 was to be more conscious about the media that I produce and that I consume, and part of that meant resisting the urge to get distracted by white male shinies and instead work on this amazing, powerful, riveting, heart-wrenching story. It took me roughly five times as long to record and edit as my podfics usually do, in part because the writing is so powerful and so precise that I wanted to be sure I was giving the text the weight it deserves, and in part because I imposed technical challenges on myself that I do think made it a stronger podfic - no voices and physically “closer” interior voices - but that necessitated lots of extensive re-records. On top of that, it’s a very emotionally demanding and intense story, which both literally slowed down my recording - I spoke everything more slowly and had a lot more pauses - but also sometimes meant more frequent emotional breaks for me to move around and make myself tea and breathe for a few minutes. I’m very happy with how it came out, and I do like to think that I did justice to leobrat’s text, but wow, it was a lot. But I’d do it again in a heartbeat - podficcing it was an amazing experience in and of itself :D

I'm having trouble choosing a third one, because while I love many of the podfics I made this year, these two were really the stand-outs. So instead of angsting over it, I'll stop there.

Summary: Esther is the motherfucking queen of Persia and also better than you. Get ready to Megillah like it's 5776.

Reccer Notes: This podfic is entirely hilarious and I adore it beyond reason. If I had to pick my favorite moment, right at this exact moment I'd have to choose the bit where she voices "¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡", but yesterday it was ".... not fine" and the day before it was "I have never pictured this banquet before, but y'know, life is a rich tapestry" and the day was any other one of the hilarious, amazingly sharp lines. <3

Cover Artist:
Summary: When Canadian figure skater Jeff Skinner wrecked his knee, he never could have imagined that he'd end up helping pay his way through college as a live-in babysitter for Eric Staal's three-year-old son, Joey.

Reccer Notes: This is one of myt favorite podfics for long car or airplane rides. The story is lovely, but more importantly, isweedan has excellent pacing and diction, and you (ok, *I*) fall in love with Jeff instantly, and then in love with Eric and Joey right along with Jeff. isweedan's affection for the characters really shines through the whole thing and it's really lovely to listen to <3

Fandom: MCU
Characters/Pairing: Darcy & Avengers, Darcy/Steve
Rating: teen and up
Content Notes: no archive warnings apply
Length: 59:12
Performer Links: shmaylor
Author: sevenfoxes
Summary: Seven times the Avengers' weapons have liked Darcy better (and one time the Avenger liked her even more).

Reccer Notes: Shmaylor does a really nice job with everyone's voice, but most especially Darcy. The way she reads Darcy's snarky asides brings both the character and the story to life, and the whole thing is just really fun. Her complete disgust at Bucky and Steve talking about Twilight gives me liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiife :D

Fandom: Marvel Cinematic Universe/Welcome to Nightvale
Characters/Pairing: Jasper Sitwell/Jemma Simmons, background Clint/Coulson
Rating: general audiences
Content Notes: creator chose not to warn (crack, homophobic language, hydra, general nightvale weirdness)
Length: 2:40:01
Performer Links: daroos (ably assisted by artzbots, blackglass, girlwithabubblegun, kalakirya, opalsong, reena_jenkins, and sabinelagrande)
Author: pagination
Cover Artist: reena_jenkins
Summary: The thing is, when an agent reaches clearance level five, it’s because they’re valuable, capable of something an exponentially diminishing few can offer in the ranks of SHIELD. Clint Barton, his personal issues notwithstanding, is unstoppable behind a scope. Jim Woo is an analyst and extractor par excellence. Melinda May has infiltrated half the presidential offices of Asia, and Phil Coulson has an instinct for the unusual that could be the basis of an entire TV show.

Jasper’s less certain what he brings to the party

Reccer Notes: ok, so yes, I'm in this, but the fact that I love it has relationship to anything else about it. Though there are a bunch of podficcers credited, it's really daroos' baby: she voiced Sitwell and did all the production, while everyone else does guest voices on individual characters. The overall effect is very NIghtvale-y, which in my opinion balances the MCU-focus of the plot and characters very nicely. The guest voices are quite good, but Daroos' Sitwell is excellent, and give the character a lot more depth than he got in the MCU itself - even if that depth comes by way of a mismatched dick and Formless Seed of Evil. It makes sense in context.
Unless you particularly avoid music in podfic, I recommend the music version - the music adds an amazing dimension to the whole thing; my favorite is In the Hall of the Mountain King, which is one of my favorite uses of music in podfic of all time :D

Fandom: Rivers of London & Good Omens

Rating: teen and up
Content Notes: none
Length: 00:34:26
Performer Links: [archiveofourown.org profile] SisterofWar
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] miztorge
Summary: In which Inspector Thomas Nightingale pursues stolen books on magic, Aziraphale presides over a book sale, Constable Peter Grant tries to do his job, and Crowley values his domestic tranquillity.

Reccer Notes: SisterOfWar does such an amazing job with the voices here! Aziraphale slight santimonious edge when he talks about helping the police during "some murders in Whitechapel," Peter being both fascinated by magic and so very tired with the minutiae of policework, Crowley intimidating Peter and doing quite a good job, actually, it's just all really, really well done, and one of my favorite small-fandom podfics <333

Fandom: Sense8
Characters/Pairing: Sun & Kala
Rating: general audiences
Content Notes: major character death
Length: 0:13:08
Performer Links: hananobira and bienenalster
Author: pax
Cover Artist: (?)
Summary: Sun’s dad kinda sucked. Kala loans her a better one.

Reccer Notes: this podfic was made as part of this year's pod_together, and it's a great example of a good idea executed well. Hananobira and Bienenalster each take a pov, Kala and Sun respectively, and the narration and dialogue switches between them aurally much as the show does visually. The switches between the voices are well done and flow naturally, probably in part because, as a pod_together project, the podficcers and the writer worked together to craft a story that would work aurally as well as on the page - and, imo, in does.

Fandom: Star Wars (Prequels Trilogy)
Characters/Pairing: Qui-Gon[&|/]Obi-Wan (reccer note: the story and series are marked Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan, but this story occupies, imo, the gray space between gen and slash best described as pre-slash, and if you go in expecting slash, you may be disappointed in that regard. hopefully not others! but that regard, at least)
Rating: Teen and Up
Content Notes: none
Length: 5:41:27
Performer Links: rippleeffect aka chibi_tenshi08
Author: flamethrower
Cover Artist: (flamethrower?)
Summary: A simple injury during what should have been a routine mission brings shocking changes to the lives of Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, and may alter the future of the Jedi Order.

Reccer Notes: I really like this podfic you guys. Rippleeffect has excellent diction and pacing, does a really good job differentiating the many voices, and their narration fits very well with the tone of the story. The story is quite long but they did an excellent job throughout, and it's one of my favorite stories for very long trips.

note: this is the first part in a VERY EPIC series, but in my opinion it ends on a very satisfactory note and stands alone well, so I'm comfortable reccing it as its own podfic.

Performer Links: asda
Author: [personal profile] aria
Summary: "Ronan," the Lone Power said softly. "Didn't He leave you out? You gave your life, and He abandoned you. What good are you without Him?"

Reccer Notes: I love bienenalster's narration, which has that lovely slightly dreamy wonder-at-the-world quality that comes through in both the canon and this story. Their Ronan voice is similarly well done and hits all the complicated emotional beats of the story, and the podfic is just really nicely done <3

Summary: Pepper leaves, and there’s no more pizza, and Thor’s already talked about Jane, and Tony suspects all of them realize, abruptly and simultaneously, that they actually have no idea what to do now. He is, in fact, pretty certain that they’re just a few minutes away from someone deciding to say something about the weather. It’s probably going to be him.

Reccer Notes: this is just a really fun story read by two people who clearly love these characters, this story (they wrote it!), and are having a great deal of fun. Their joy seeps into the reading and it's just an immense amount of fun to listen to, the way listening to friends having fun together often is :D Also jonesandashes' Natasha "asking" for bacon gives me liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiife :DDDDDDD

Summary: "Clint, who had been half dozing, lifts his head off his paws and barks indignantly at the vet."

Reccer Notes: this has long been one of my go-to comfort podfics. the way sly takes you through corgi!clint's pov, you don't really question how or why clint came to be a corgi, you just want someone to cuddle him close until he stops hurting. happily, phil and sly are there to do that. sly's affection for clint and phil really comes through, and also feels likes their love and affection for each other, and the whole thing is just really well done <333

Length: 1:53:25
Performer Links: [personal profile] exmanhater | [archiveofourown.org profile] exmanhater

Cover Artist: exmanhater
Summary: Soulbond AU: When Maria is sent to intercept the Black Widow, there are certain things she wasn't expecting- certain very inconvenient things. Now they're stuck trying to distinguish the desirable from the inevitable.

Reccer Notes: Exmanhater's performance is, as always, entirely amazing :D Exmanhater adds a layer of humor and mild frustration to Maria's voice that feels perfectly in character - an impressive feat, given how little Maria appears in canon. Maria's strong attraction to Natasha and simultaneous reluctance to get involved in Nat's already very complicated situation are audible, and that tension keeps the action grounded in Maria's point of view, which is a lovely way to experience the story, and makes it all the more satisfying when both of them finally get over themselves and into each other's pants :D

Fandom: Due South
Characters/Pairing: RayK/Fraser
Rating: mature
Content Notes: none
Length: 43:02
Performer Links: zabira
Author: cesperanza
Summary: I am not the only person here who wants a do-over.

Reccer Notes: The way Zabira voices poor, beleaguered Ray is simply adorable – it's like listening to a naturalist talk about the Ways of the Mysterious and Elusive Fraser, and it never fails to make me smile. Zabira communicates Ray's humor, amusement, frustration and Voice of Judgment delightfully, and it fits really well with the first-person pov and present tense of the writing. One of my favorite moments is the way Zabira reads the line “oh god, he's sucking my bracelet” (it's a sex scene, run with it!) and Ray sounds so turned on and confused and so incredibly willing to go with wherever Fraser wants to take the bracelet sucking and it's just so very well done <3

Day 7

In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme. (More than one is okay, too.) Tell us about it, tell us why you love it, give us some examples and recs. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

One of my favorite things in the world is when fanworks deviate from traditional formatting; that can mean chat format, multimedia, sound effects, musical interludes, multivoiced, radio snippets, gifs, manips, fanart, clickables, snippets from letters, bits that have been crossed out, emoticons, recipes, comics, chibis, vids, fourth-wall breaking, what have you. I'm not even sure if I could explain why it makes me so happy - something about it being more immersive, or that it surprises me, or that it gives me more ways to come at the story... I don't know. But I literally wiggle in my chair like a puppy when I find a new one :D
I try a lot of this kind of thing in my podfic, which works to varying degrees, but here are some fanworks that I've liked that used it (and one self-rec, because DYWTDMA will never not be something I rec)

Do You Want to Date My Avatar by christy_corr (teen wolf)
Do You Want to Date my Avatar (podfic) multivoiced, directed by me (teen wolf)
Good Help is Hard to Find, or The Hazards of Reading Prophecy by somnolent_blue and fleurrochard my rec (good omens)
Ring (podfic) by lunate8 my rec (person of interest)
Random Craigslist Missed Connections Derek/Stiles Not!Fic of Doom by fire_juggler (teen wolf)
Random Craigslist Missed Connections Derek/Stiles Not!Fic of Doom (podfic) by inkjunket (teen wolf)
Needs More Sparkly Pens by mm_coconut (teen wolf)
#girlavenger, or How Natasha Trended on Twitter and Saved the World by reena_jenkins and sisi_rambles my rec (avengers)
In Love With My Radio by lunchee (merlin)
Pairing Pendragon/Merlin by lunchee (podfic) (merlin)
Friendship Set on Fire by blackglass, circ_bamboo and reena_jenkins (avengers)
Steve Rogers at 100: Celebrating Captain America on Film by eleveninches, febricant, hellotailor, m_leigh, neenya and tigrrmilk (avengers)

Another pretty prominent favorite thing about which I could write for hours is stories about or from the pov of minor characters, especially ones that clearly had their own stories but that the narrative didn't have time (or interest -_-) in exploring. My deep and abiding love for DUM-E is well known (:D), but gimme more fanworks about Armando Munoz/Darwin, about Elrond, Arwen, and Eowyn, about Jenny Mills, about Natasha, Sam Wilson, Pepper, Rhodey, Darcy, Jane and Sif, about Gamora, about Jadzia, about CJ Cregg and Donna Moss, about Stacker Pentecost and the Kaidanovskys, about Boyd and Erica, about Diana Barrigan. I love my main characters, but I know their stories. I want to know about CJ's first crush and if she was nervous when she did her first press briefing. I want to know if Pentecost felt prepared to adopt a kid. I want to know how Gamora learned to pilot a spaceship. I want to know about Jane and Darcy's late night dance parties. I want to know what Boyd and Erica whisper to each other in the middle of the night. Tellmetellmetellme.

Snail Mail by pockyslash (xmen)
Going On by mautadite Sleepy Hollow)
Most Precious by mautadite (spartacus)
the Priming Game by amonitrate (iron man)
That Kind of Day by neery (captain america: the winter soldier)
The Letty 'Verse by merfilly (fast and the furious series)
Heeding the Call by marchingjaybird (Pacific Rim)
ecstasies where they forgot to kiss by citadelofswords (xmen)
so you think (that being alone's the only way to be) by hito (teen wolf)

And you know what - on that note, I'm gonna cross off another snowflake_challenge day and make my fannish wish list.

Day 2

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your wish-list if you feel comfortable doing so. Maybe someone will grant a wish. Check out other people's posts. Maybe you will grant a wish. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.

I wish for fanworks that focus on minor characters and fanworks that play around with formatting. That's only two, but I gave long lists of example ideas up there if anyone wants more guidance :D

Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] emmypenny
Cover Artist: [archiveofourown.org profile] reena_jenkins
Summary: "Natasha becomes an internet phenomenon. It's nothing that she was ever trained for."

Reccer Notes: this podfic makes me so incredibly happy - just so, so happy. Reena_jenkins' narration is, as always, perfect: Natasha's snark is biting, Maria's done-with-everything-ness drips just that, Darcy is simply adorable. Sisi_rambles reads the tweets with, as applicable, meanness, sarcasm, and pride, and they slot right in with the rest of the narration. Having a different voice for the tweets was a good choice - it reinforces the difference between the real world narration and the social media, and as the point of the social media is to bring other people together, it's a really nice juxtaposition. Also A++++ music choice :DDD

"the hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiills are aliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiive/with filthy luuuuuucreee"). At the same time, the podfic keeps some of the text-specific elements (footnotes! here set off with a small "bing!", which is quite nice), and the whole thing just come together really well and both somnolentblue and fleurrochard should be very proud of their work. On the podfic-specific side of things, fleurrochard's narration is pitch-perfect and her voices are clear and gloriously specific (I particularly like Crowley's sibilance). I could (and have!) cheerfully listen to this on repeat for hours :DDD

Reccer Notes: I really love the way Sly reads Zuko's pov; Zuko and Iroh's affection for (and irritation with) each other really come through, as does Sly's affection for both of them. It's a short story that should pack a heavy emotional wallop (Iroh and Zuko sort of have a conversation about Zuko's asexuality), but to Iroh it's only an issue insofar as it's an issue for Zuko, and Sly reads Iroh in such a way that, like Zuko, I almost miss the implication of what he's saying, every single time. I've listened to it four times, in anticipation of writing this review, and every time the realization sort of steals over me, in much the same way as it does Zuko, and it's a really nice listener-and-Zuko mindmeld thing :)
