2013 End of Year Meme
Dec. 30th, 2013 10:32 pmPublic Podfics Made in 2013:
look there were 125 of the little buggers, if you count everything I was at least a voice in and the ones where my collaborator and I switched voices and the ones I directed and I certainly don't have that kind of patience.
But I can say that it comes to a total of:
125 podfics
54:41:54 total length
of which I directed two, collaborated in ten and did 113 alone.
If this seems like a lot, I'd point out that a lot of these are tiny podfics of a few minutes - 24 are under 5 minutes and 48 are under 10 minutes.
A little more breakdown, to make up for the lack of links: that's 11 Avengers podfics (of which one is a Buffy crossover), 21 for Teen Wolf (one of which is a Supernatural crossover), 6 for the Hobbit, 8 for Person of Interest (nearly all of which are tumblr fics), 9 for Supernatural (of which 3, Be My Savior, Old Gods and Old Rules I'd been holding onto since late 2011 or early 2012), and a handful each for a whole bunch of small fandoms, including Deep Space Nine, the Curse of Chalion, Tortall, the Old Kingdom (Sabriel/Abhorsen), Stealing the Elf King's Roses, Vikings, and Warehouse 13.
Which podfic did you have the most fun making?
Apart from the collabs, all of which were stupid amounts of fun? Maybe Robot Trip, mostly because when I got the idea to put in kazoo music for Dummy I cackled to myself for far longer than I'd care to admit XD
Which podfic was the most technically, logistically and/or physically challenging?
Do you Want to Date My Avatar, easily. Organizing nine people over skype isn't easy! If I did a similar project I'd do it differently, but I'd definitely find a way to have everyone in the same (virtual) space, which was definitely the best part.
Which podfic took the most acting or emotional work?
Shieldmaidens of Erebor, actually! It was really hard to stop from going entirely over the top, which would have made the whole thing silly, rather than dramatic. Also Fuzzy Logic, which has a bodyswap, so I swapped voices but (attempted to) keep intonation, which worked out fairly well.
Most underappreciated?
The Curse of Chalion podfic, easily. Which is fine – it's a fandom of my heart, and one I love dearly, but the fandom is tiny, and some of the stories I podficced, though excellent, are hard sells. Life, Stripped of All Luxuries is a great example - I love the story to pieces, but given its tags (hurt/comfort, warfare, seige of Gotorget, military, starvation, poetry), I'm not overly surprised it's only got eight hits. I do really love that story though, and I think I did a decent job with the podfic.
Personal favorite, for whatever reason?
Oooo this is hard. Last year I had a long list, and this year I do too XD I gave into my id and did a whole bunch of Teen Wolf hurt/comfort-ish podfics, which I really love – Being Found, Finding, Chase Away Every Monster, Sigh No More, Hail to Whatever You Found in the Sunlight, the Mending that you Need, The One where Derek Almost Dies – and those continue to be good for me, when I'm having a hard time of it. I also do really like how Shieldmaidens of Erebor turned out, and I love the kink meme in 30 lines ones :D
Most difficult to make?
Once again, omitting the collabs, because while I love them dearly, they are a pain to make! Otherwise, I'd have to go with a tie between Destroy Everything You Touch (an Ace/Nine story that I had a hard time getting the tone down for) and Cataclysms: a Sourcebook (Supernatural, from the pov of future historians; for some reason I had issues with the pacing on this one, and did a lot of retakes).
Was there one that didn't turn out the way you wanted?
Probably Those Who Run With Wolves. I didn't have the Kaidanovsky's voices down yet, and the tone isn't quite right /o\ I've got another with them that I keep redoing, because I love the story but can't quite make it work.
Biggest learning experience?
Still have to omit the collabs! Learning how to use tumblr was one, and as I originally did that for the sole purpose of finding more tumblr fic to record, I'd say it qualifies! In terms of recording, maybe Hear it in the Thunder and the Rain, which made me really slow down and dwell on every word. It's a really heavy story, though not in terms of content – rather, at least for me, each word has a lot of weight to it, such that I wanted to be sure to give each its due.
How has your podfic process changed over the year?
I've started trying to use the click method recently, to try to speed up my editing, but I'm not altogether happy with how it turns out, so I'm not sure I'll keep doing it. Also this year I've done a TON of collaborative work, of many different types, including the in-person kind, which was a lot of fun :D
Do you have any podfic plans or goals in 2014?
I'm NOT going to participate in amplificathon next year – except possibly trying for single longest podfic. I've got my eye on something, but have yet to either test record or ask the author, and since the silly thing is about 90K, I'm not saying anything more until I ask!
ETA: I spent so long saying "well, the collabs come first OBVIOUSLY so next up is..." that I didn't actually talk about the collabs, which is a CRIME.
First off, there's Do You Want to Date My Avatar, a theatripod piece I directed based on a Teen Wolf story written by christycorr and starring the vocal talents of *deep breath* opalsong, majoline, drfumblesmcstupid, piscaria, anna)unfolding, kdheart, the24thkey, starduchess and hananobira, and visual art by yue_ix! This was an AMAZING project that took over my life for awhile, and though I would indeed do it different were I to do it again, the whole thing did - through some miracle - actually work out really, really well. The finished version does have a minor editing issue (which is entirely my fault) that I haven't figured out how to fix, but it'll happen, and it's during an (intentionally) confusing part of the podfic, so I'm not too worried. Though the finished product is amazing, the process of making it was even more so. I had everyone on skype together, and though that was a pain and a half to organize, we made it work, and the bits that happened around the recording were some of my favorite parts (we did some GLORIOUS spitballing at each other, which is included as AU bonus tracks :D). It was a great experience, and I loved every minute of it <3
I did chatfics - recording two people's written spitball session - with a number of people, including opalsong, somnolent_blue, reena_jenkins and analise010, and those were also a lot of fun. We switched parts on a number of them, and it was really interesting to see how each of us interpreted the same roles differently - instant repods, kinda.
I was a voice in a number of not-in-person collabs directed/organized by other people - calliope made Houses and Rooms Full of Perfume happen (I was Thor, who has a single - awesome - line), lunchee corralled might as well kiss the monster, laugh and fuck until you're dead (I was Peter Hale, which was the creepiest I've ever - intentionally - tried to be, and that was an experience in and of itself!), and vassalady managed The Lee Jordan Show (I was Lee Jordan and had a ball and a half with it, let me tell you :D).
teprometo and I did two more collaborative collabs, one where we spitballed ideas at each other and then she massaged them into place and I recorded the result (Spontaneous Knotting of an Agitated String) and one in the pod_together mold, where she wrote and I recorded but we both consulted heavily on each other's work and made changes to our own as a result (Let Go).
Optional, organized by lunate8, was especially fun because it was recorded in person at CONvergence (aka my first con ever). I was Thor (there's a pattern here and I'm not ashamed to admit it), and recording live with other podficcers was SO MUCH FUN YOU GUYS OMG. OMGOMGOMG. I GOT TO MEET OTHER PODFICCERS! AND RECORD WITH THEM! IT WAS THE BEST THING
I actually did several other live collabs, but they haven't been ~released yet, so they'll appear in next year's meme :) Optional involved the most people though - there was me, lunate8, bessyboo, klb, opalsong and revolutionaryjo - and having that much live feedback was SO MUCH FUN
ETAA: HORROR I AM MOST REMISS FOR JELAZAKAZONE AND I DID SOME IN-PERSON COLLABS THAT ARE OUT AND YOU SHOULD GO CHECK THEM OUT NOW. Possession and Gentleman's Dare, both of which are porny, which was SO MUCH FUN and also just really interesting because recording porny podfic is both an oddly intimate and dispassionate thing, and this was even more so. Though dispassionate may not be the right word, especially as in this context it comes across as slightly pejorative - self-conscious-making is better, and doing it with someone you've known for awhile - but have never met in person - exacerbates that. But self-conscious in an environment that I knew to be entirely safe - because I did know jela, and I did trust her - and that was a really interesting difference that I'm not sure I can articulate, but really appreciated. Also, recording with someone else is REALLY FUN, and recording porn is REALLY FUN, and recording porn with someone is EVEN MORE SUPERLATIVES :DDD
Last but not least, I also organized a Pacific Rim collab, A Cry Answered, which also featured the talents of such_heights, biterlotus and kdheart. This was a lot less intense than DYWDMA - for one thing, we didn't do it over skype - but there was some conversations that made editing interesting. I had this idea for that one that I wanted to keep the world really small, so I had everyone do their own character's sections and their dialogue that appeared in other people's sections, and had a different voice - but only one - do all the non-main characters. It may have been a little high-concept, but I think the finished product works quite well :D
